Egypt receives first Type 209 submarine from German TKMS
Cairo, MINA – The Egyptian Navy received its second Type 209/1400 submarine, the S42, in a ceremony on Tuesday in Kiel City, Germany.
Commander of the Egyptian Navy Ahmed Khalid Hassan raised during the ceremony the Egyptian flag on the submarine, manufactured by the German company ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, WAM reported.
The new submarine, which will officially join the Egyptian naval forces within days, is a technological addition to Egypt’s navy and will further its capability to bolster Egyptian national security, Commander Hassan said.
The Type-209/1400 has a range of 11,000 nautical miles and a top speed of 21.5 knots. It is equipped with missiles and torpedoes.
The new submarine, S42, is the second of four Type-209 craft ordered from Germany, two in 2011 and two more in 2014.
The first craft, S41, was handed over in Germany in December, officially joining the Egyptian navy’s fleet in April. (T/RS5/RS1)
