US “Deeply Troubled” by Crisis in Burma, Condemns Violence – White House
US Press Secretary Sarah Sanders.
Washington, MINA – The US is “deeply troubled” by the crisis in Burma, where at least 300,000 people have fled their homes in the wake of attacks on Burmese security posts on Aug. 25, KUNA quoted the White House as saying Monday.
“We reiterate our condemnation of those attacks and ensuing violence,” press secretary Sarah Sanders said during a briefing.
More than a quarter of a million Rohingya refugees have flooded into Bangladesh in the past two weeks, fleeing violence in Burma’s Rakhine state, the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) said on Friday.
The numbers represent about a third of the country’s Rohingya people, a stateless Muslim minority, according to UN data.
At least 1,000 people have been killed during this period, the data shows, and officials have said that figure may be a low estimate.
The predominantly Buddhist Burma considers the Rohingya to be Bangladeshi but Bangladesh says they are Burmese.
The government of Burma blames terrorists for starting the recent violence. (T/RS5/RS1)
