Tunis, MINA – Eight ships from the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) set sail from Tunisian ports over the weekend, launching their mission to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid.

Local media outlet ElNabaa, confirmed by volunteers on the ground, reported that the departing vessels included five Spanish-flagged ships and three Tunisian ships. They departed from two main ports, Bizerte and Qomret (La Goulette), heading into international waters of the Mediterranean.

On Sunday, another vessel, the Aladdin, left the Port of Sidi Bou Said. It was the first ship to depart from that port before joining the rest of the flotilla route to Gaza.

Of the 17 ships docked in Bizerte, six have already departed while 11 remain in port. At Qomret, two Tunisian ships have set sail, one is preparing to depart, and five are still docked.

The GSF ultimately plans to mobilize 50 ships, making it the largest maritime humanitarian mission ever organized for Gaza. The fleet will include 23 ships from Maghreb countries, 22 from Europe and other international partners, and five from Indonesia. All vessels are expected to regroup in international waters before continuing together toward Gaza.

Despite facing technical, logistical, and maritime challenges, activists stressed their commitment to the mission.

“This is a collective effort to ensure humanitarian aid reaches the people of Gaza, who remain isolated under blockade,” said Nurhadis, a volunteer with the Aqsa Working Group (AWG), speaking from the Port of Sidi Bou Said on Sunday evening.

Observers noted that the flotilla’s schedule may shift over the next 24 hours depending on logistics, fuel availability, and sea conditions. Nevertheless, the initial departure of eight ships marks a significant milestone in global solidarity with Palestine.[]
