Kairo, 24 Rabi’ul Akhir 1436/14 February 2015 (MINA) – At least an Egyptian officer has been killed and eight people have sustained injuries in a bomb attack in the capital, Cairo.

An Egyptian police convoy was the target of the bomb attack in Ain Shams, a neighborhood in northeast Cairo, Egyptian officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.

The officials noted that seven Egyptian police conscripts and a civilian were wounded in the attack as well, Press Tv quoted by Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA) as reporting,

The Egyptian Interior Ministry said in a statement that the convoy was targeted by a “home-made bomb,” adding that the officer, who succumbed to his injuries in the hospital, was serving at Egypt’s anti-riot unit.

The Ajnad Misr (Soldiers of Egypt) militant group claimed responsibility for the deadly attack.

Bombings by anti-government militants are regular in Cairo and Egypt’s second largest city, Alexandria, although the focal point of the militancy still remains in the restive Sinai Peninsula, where Ansar is mainly based.

On Tuesday, five bomb explosions rocked Alexandria, wounding nearly a dozen people.

Two bombs went off outside a police station in Montaza district in eastern Alexandria, injuring ten people.

A third explosion outside a police station in another neighborhood wounded one civilian. Two other bombs went off in the same area leaving no casualties.

Last week, a blast near a police checkpoint on the western outskirts of the Mediterranean city of Alexandria left two people wounded. (T/P002/P3)
