Bogor, MINA – Economic practitioner Arief Rahman has encouraged young people to learn from the story of Prophet Musa (Moses), emphasizing courage in upholding justice, compassion, responsibility, and piety as essential qualities for preparing for marriage and building a family.

Arief delivered the message during a premarital seminar titled “Marriage Is More Than Love: Prepare Your Knowledge, Mental Readiness, Finances, and Physical Health” at MM Cileungsi, Bogor, West Java, on Sunday.

He explained that after leaving Egypt, Prophet Musa traveled to Madyan, where he encountered two women struggling to water their livestock because they had to wait for other shepherds to finish.

Prophet Musa helped the women as an act of compassion toward those facing difficulties.

The story is recorded in the Quran in Surah Al-Qasas, verses 23–24. The verses recount how Prophet Musa watered their livestock before withdrawing to the shade and praying to Allah.

“My Lord, indeed I am in need of whatever good You would send down to me,” he prayed, as stated in Surah Al-Qasas, verse 24.

According to Arief, the Prophet’s actions should be emulated not simply because those he helped were women, but because he recognized that someone was facing hardship and needed assistance.

He said that standing up for justice and showing concern for others are important character traits that young people should develop before starting a family.

The Quran, in Surah Al-Qasas, verses 25–28, continues the story with one of the women approaching Prophet Musa to convey an invitation from her father.

After Prophet Musa explained his circumstances, the father offered him marriage to one of his daughters on the condition that he work for him for eight years, with the option of completing ten years.

The story offers lessons about responsibility, good character, mutual agreement, and commitment in building a household. Arief emphasized that preparing for marriage involves more than love; it also requires the knowledge, emotional readiness, financial preparation, physical well-being, and sense of responsibility needed to build a family.[]
