PRESIDENT JOKOWI ARRIVES IN PARIS TO ATTEND CLIMATE CHANGE SUMMIT
Paris, 1 Shafar 1437/30 November 2015 (MINA) – President Joko Widodo arrived in Paris on Sunday afternoon, November 29, to attend the UNFCCC COP21 climate summit, and brought the message that Indonesia is interested in working together to face the challenges of climate change.
“We are giving political support, as in previous conferences, we give our commitment,” said President Jokowi before heading to Paris, France.
The President also said that Indonesia has 17,000 islands and will experience the hardest impact if sea levels rise due to climate change. Thus, Indonesia has an interest to ensure that the impact can be minimized.
Indonesia also has submitted a commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA) quoted Antara News Agency as reporting.
“We will then convey concrete actions that we will do, including peat forest restoration, review of existing permits and a moratorium in licensing,” the president said.
He is scheduled to return to Jakarta Wednesday this week.
More than 190 head of states and administrations gather in Paris for the The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) 21st session of the conference of the parties (COP). The conference is scheduled to begin today, November 30, 2015.
This year’s conference is significant because for the first time it will aim to achieve a legally binding and universal agreement on dealing with climate change. (T/R07/R01)
