NATO Units for Poland and Baltic States to Arrive in May

Brussels, 17 Dzulhijjah 1437/19 September 2016 (MINA) – New NATO units for Poland and the Baltic states should be deployed starting in May, a spokesman for the military alliance said Sunday, according to DPA.

NATO in June announced plans to deploy four battalions – around 4,000 soldiers – to Poland and the Baltic states as part of the alliance’s response to Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

The eastern-most members of NATO have said that they feel threatened by Russia, which has been accused of violating international law by annexing the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea.

Moscow’s support for separatists in eastern Ukraine has raised further concerns.

NATO’s response to the Ukraine crisis was purely defensive and that it did not seek any “confrontation” with Russia the military alliance said. (T/R07/R01)
