Mogherini: EU to Mobilise International Community to Support Rohingya Muslims

Brussels, MINA – EU High Representative Federica Mogherini underlined Sunday the 28-member European bloc’s continued support to the Rohingya refugees living in Bangladesh.

“The EU and its member states deliver more than half of the total financial support to the Rohingya refugees and we will continue to support,” KUNA reported, citing Mogherini in press statements after visiting the Rohingya refugees at the Kutupalong Refugee Camp in Cox’s Baza district of Bangladesh earlier Sunday.

She noted that the people of Bangladesh and the government of Bangladesh are aware of the difficult situation the local communities and Bangladesh are facing in hosting such big numbers of refugees.

“The refugees are carrying with them terrible stories especially women and children. I believe that the people of Bangladesh are showing an enormous respect to the Rohingya refugees,” said the EU foreign policy chief, whose remarks were available in in Brussels.

“We will look into ways to mobilise international community support and we will continue to lead the donor’s community because we believe that the life and dignity of people especially of women and children have to be respected,” she added.

According to the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commission in Bangladesh, at least 625,000 Rohingyas have entered Bangladesh fleeing the violence which erupted in Myanmar on August 25.

Later today Mogherini met Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of Bangladesh and discussed the situation of the Rohingya refugees and bilateral EU-Bangladesh ties. (T/RS5/RS1)
