US CALLS ON CAIRO TO STOP POLITICAL DETENTIONS
Washington, 3 Muharram 1435/7 November 2013 (MINA) – The White House’s Official Press Secretary Jay Carney announced that the US administration is calling on Egypt to put an end to political detentions, Anadolu news agency reported.
Carney pointed out that despite the support of millions of Egyptians, the current government has taken several measures that are in opposition to the most basic principles of democracy, MEMO reported as quoted by Mi’raj News Agency (MINA).
In a press conference, the American official said that US president Barack Obama has been closely following what is going on in Egypt. He affirmed that Cairo is still a top priority on Obama’s agenda, Middle East Monitor (MEMO) quoted by Mi’raj News Agency as reporting, Wednesday (31/10)
According to Carney, the latest visit of US Secretary of State John Kerry to Cairo was proof of American support for Egypt and the Egyptian people.
He added that the visit was also illustrative of Washington’s commitment to the democratic transition in Egypt, and the US will continue discussing this issue with the current government. (T/P012/P03)
