President Regrets Execution of Tursilawati Without Notification

Jakarta, MINA – Indonesian President Joko Widodo regretted the execution carried out by Saudi Arabia against Indonesian workers from Majalengka, Tuti Tursilawati. without prior notification to the Government of Indonesia.

“Yes, indeed, we should regret that without notification,” he said, at JIExpo Kemayoran, Tuesday (31/10).

The President said in a number of occasions he had discussed with Saudi King Salman bin Abdul Aziz regarding the protection of Indonesian migrant workers.

“I have met many times, both of King Salman and Prince Muhammad bin Salman, then finally with the Foreign Minister of Saudi Arabia, I keep on repeating,” he said.

Tursilawati was sentenced to death in 2011 on charges of deliberately killing the father of her employer Suud Mulhak Al Utaibi in 2010 who previously tried to rape her.

Indonesian President said the government’s attempt to release Tuti from the snare of the death penalty had been repeatedly carried out.

The liberation efforts have also been intensified by government representatives in Saudi Arabia through the Indonesian Embassy in Riyadh and Indonesian Consulate General in Jeddah.

“This has been repeated directly to King Salman, the Foreign Minister has repeatedly (discussed the release), the Ambassador also continues to make efforts. But we must know it is the jurisdiction of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia,” he explained

Moreover, the Indonesian Government through representatives in Saudi Arabia also has tried hard to accompany Tuti and tried to avoid Her from the death sentence.

The effort included submitting three appeals, and two reviews, but only one request was fulfilled.

Previously, the former of Indonesian President,  Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has discussed with Saudi in 2011 and President Joko Widodo in 2016 has sent a letter of application to alleviate Tuti’s verdict but both of them were failed. (T/Sj/RS5)
