Kuala Lumpur, 18 Rajab 1437/26 April 2016 (MINA) – Information sharing among ASEAN countries is vital in preventing piracy in the region, said Head of Tanjung Priok Port Authority, Ministry of Transportation Indonesia, Capt Sahattua Simatupang.

He said piracy has became a regional problem and therefore ASEAN countries need to enhance cooperation as a preventive measure.

“For example, when pirates attack a ship…we must coordinate and monitor the sea and the next thing is to alert ASEAN countries.

“I suggest to use this method to our community in curbing sea crimes,” he told Bernama when met on the sidelines of the 8th Maritime Institute of Malaysia International Conference on The Straits of Malacca 2016 themed “Revolving Regional Issues and Their Impact in the Straits of Malacca’, here today.

The two-day conference is being attended by over 100 participants from Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Japan, China and Pakistan.  (T/R07/R01)
