Geneva, MINA – UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, on Friday, expressed deep concern over the escalating violence and human rights violations in Sudan, which has been engulfed in civil war since April 2023.
“The latest fighting and the grave risk of further deterioration of this already brutal and deadly conflict raise serious concerns for the protection of civilians, amidst a rampant culture of impunity,” Türk stated in a declaration, as reported by Anadolu on Saturday.
He warned of the “catastrophic consequences” of the ongoing and intensifying violence, particularly in the North Darfur and Kordofan regions, where reports of civilian casualties, sexual violence, abductions, and looting continue to emerge.
The war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has killed tens of thousands of lives, displaced over 13 million people, and devastated health facilities, homes, and markets. []
