Jakarta, MINA — Thousands of workers commemorating International Workers’ Day (May Day) 2026 at the National Monument (Monas) in Central Jakarta returned home happy after receiving food packages from President Prabowo on Friday.
The distribution of these food packages was a moment enthusiastically welcomed by the protesters, especially amidst the increasing demand for basic necessities.
Lutfi, a female laborer working in Jakarta, expressed her gratitude for the assistance she received. She considered the package to be quite complete and useful for her daily needs.
“It’s quite good, there are basic necessities. There’s a lot of them, from milk, rice, and oil,” said Lutfi.

Lilis Suryani, a housewife from Depok, echoed this sentiment. She said she came to the Monas area after hearing about the distribution of basic necessities for the community.
She said the assistance was very helpful, especially for families from lower-middle income backgrounds.
The distribution of these basic necessities also added to this year’s May Day commemoration, which proceeded in an orderly and conducive manner. The workers not only voiced their aspirations but also felt direct government attention through the assistance provided.
The May Day demonstration at Monas itself was attended by various labor groups from several areas in Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek), who expressed demands related to worker welfare, labor protection, and increased living wages. []
