Jakarta, MINA – Indonesian University students staged a demonstration in Central Jakarta on Tuesday to mark the second anniversary of President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka’s administration, demanding stronger action on forest and land fires, economic inequality, corruption and rising education costs.

The protest was organized by the Committee to Save the People’s Sovereignty (Komite Sadar), an alliance of student organizations and members of the public. Demonstrators marched from Tugu Proklamasi to the Tugu Tani area, where they displayed banners and raised pamphlets outlining their demands.

As of 5 p.m. local time, protesters were still voicing their concerns at the site, according to Kontan.co.id’s monitoring.

Fathimah Azzahra, vice chair of the University of Indonesia Student Executive Board (BEM UI) for 2026, said the demonstration involved students from several universities alongside other elements of society. She described the protest as the alliance’s second organized agenda.

“Today BEM UI together with other university BEMs, and together with community components, want to hold an action at Tugu Tani. Today is actually the second agenda, and actually today we are bringing five demands,” Fathimah said at the demonstration site.

One of the alliance’s main demands was for the government to declare forest and land fires a national disaster. The students also called for legal action against corporations involved in the fires and the restoration of damaged ecosystems.

They further urged the government to reform economic policy to address social inequality, end what they described as the shrinking of civic space and militarization, eradicate corruption, collusion and nepotism, and reduce education costs while establishing an education system that serves the public.

Police personnel were deployed around the demonstration site to maintain security and manage traffic affected by the gathering.

Komite Sadar comprises student organizations and representatives from the University of Indonesia, Bandung Institute of Technology, Padjadjaran University, Diponegoro University, Semarang State University, Gadjah Mada University, UPN Veteran Yogyakarta, Airlangga University and Brawijaya University.

The demonstration came two years after Prabowo and Gibran took office in October 2024. During their administration, issues including living costs, environmental damage, economic inequality, corruption and concerns about democratic freedoms have featured in public debate.

Forest and land fires have also remained a major environmental and public health concern in Indonesia, with haze affecting communities and, at times, crossing national borders into neighboring countries. Student and civil society groups have called for stronger prevention measures, accountability for companies implicated in land burning, and comprehensive restoration of affected areas.

The protest reflects continuing demands from student groups for the government to address environmental, economic and education-related concerns as it enters its third year in office.[]
