Soputan Mount Experiences 82 Times Lava Avalanches

North Sulawesi, MINA – The Center of Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) noted 82 earthquake and 61 gust earthquakes of Soputan Mount on Monday morning between 00:00 a.m. and 06:00 a.m local time.

“Soputan Mount rapidly has been experiencing volcanic activity from yesterday until this morning,” MINA reported, citing PVMBG in its official statement on Monday.

Visually, the mountain has 1784 meters high above sea level that covered by fog. The peak is covered by 7.5 km of smoke and a 7 km eruption.

When the mount’s status at standby level, wind blows weakly to moderate and leads to the southeast.

PVMBG recommends to do not live at a radius of 4 km from the mountaintop and 6.5 km at the west-southwest sector.

“The sector is a crater opening area, in order to avoid the threat of lava avalanche, the people should not be in the area,” said the statement.

Since yesterday morning, the government has set a red Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation (VONA) for flights from and to Sam Ratulangi Airport, Manado City. (T/Sj/RS5)
