Jakarta, MINA – Indonesia plans to build a tunnel connecting its future Hajj residential complex in Mecca to the Grand Mosque, aiming to improve access and mobility for Indonesian pilgrims, particularly the elderly, Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar said Tuesday.

The planned Indonesian Hajj village will be located about 1 to 3 kilometers (0.6 to 1.9 miles) from the Kaaba, Islam’s holiest site. The tunnel is expected to provide a safer and more efficient route for pilgrims traveling to and from the mosque.

“There will be a tunnel connecting the Grand Mosque directly to the Indonesian Hajj village,” Nasaruddin told reporters at the presidential palace complex in Jakarta.

He said the project is part of Indonesia’s long-term efforts to enhance the quality of Hajj services, ensuring easier, safer and more efficient access for millions of Indonesian pilgrims each year.

The integrated complex is also expected to ease transportation congestion around the Grand Mosque and reduce physical strain on pilgrims during peak worship periods.

Nasaruddin added that the plan remains under discussion with Saudi authorities as part of broader bilateral cooperation on Hajj and Umrah management.

Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority country, sends the largest number of pilgrims to Mecca annually. The proposed tunnel is seen as a major step toward improving infrastructure and services for Indonesian pilgrims in Saudi Arabia.[]
