Amman, 6 Ramadan 1438/1 June 2017 (MINA) – Jordan’s Foreign Ministry has handed the Israeli Embassy in Amman a memo protesting allowing Jewish extremists into the Al-Aqsa Mosque under the protection of the Israeli police, KUNA reported, citing the ministry in statement issued Wednesday.

According to the statement, the Jordanian government demanded Israel to immediately put an end to such acts of aggression and provocation, and to respect the Jordanian role in caring for Islamic holy sites in Jerusalem.

Such acts inflame Muslims’ feelings around the world, violate Article 9 of the peace treaty between Jordan and Israel and are not in line with Israeli’s legal obligations, as the occupying power, in accordance with international law, the ministry noted.

In addition, these actions harm the relations between the two countries and undermine efforts to reduce tension and preserve the status quo in the Al-Aqsa.

The 1994 peace treaty between the two countries recognizes Jordan’s role as a custodian of Muslim and Christian shrines in the Jerusalem, which was occupied by Israel during the 1967 war. (T/RS5/RS1)
