BOMBING IN EGYPT’S ALEXANDRIA WOUNDS 4

Kairo, 24 Jumadil Awwal 1436/15 March 2015 (MINA) – A bomb has gone off in the Egyptian coastal city of Alexandria, leaving four people injured, security officials say.

According to authorities, the bombing took place on Saturday when an improvised explosive device detonated near the local branch of an international bank.

The incident came at a time that the Egyptian government is hosting an international economic conference in the Red Sea resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh, Press Tv quoted by Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA) as reporting.

No individual or group has so far claimed responsibility for the Saturday act of terror.

However, such incidents are usually blamed on the militants who have intensified terrorist attacks across Egypt since the ouster of Mohamed Morsi, the country’s former president, in July 2013.

On March 8, at least one person lost his life and six others sustained injuries in a bomb explosion that struck an area near a branch of the French supermarket giant, Carrefour, in Alexandria.

Later that day, another bomb went off outside Alexandria’s Muharram Bek police station, injuring one person.

Some militants have lately staged a campaign of small bombings that target local and foreign business interests, including banks, mobile phone service providers and fast food restaurants, among other places.

Militants have been the most active in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, where they have frequently targeted and killed Egyptian security forces.

The so-called Ansar Bait al-Maqdis, a Takfiri militant group, has claimed responsibility for most of the attacks in the highly volatile area.

In late January, the group killed dozens of people and injured many others in a series of coordinated attacks in Sinai. (T/P002/R03)
