West Bank, MINA – Legal and political experts assert that Israel has no legal authority to permanently replace Jordanian-era laws with its own legislation in the occupied West Bank. They argue that Israel can only suspend these laws through military orders, not abolish them, as it lacks sovereignty over the territory, Anadolu Agency reported.

On Sunday, Israel’s Security Cabinet approved decisions to facilitate Israeli land purchases in the West Bank by repealing Jordanian laws that have governed land ownership since 1967. Issa Al-Shalabi, a political science professor at Jordan’s Al-Hussein Bin Talal University, told Anadolu that while Israel can suspend laws militarily, “legally it does not have the right to permanently abolish these laws or replace them with its sovereign legislation.” He warned that facilitating land sales to settlers may constitute a war crime under UN resolutions.

Abdullah Kanaan, secretary-general of Jordan’s Royal Committee for Jerusalem Affairs, called the Israeli measures “null, void, and illegal,” stating they aim to legitimize settlements and annexation. He urged the international community to act, warning that silence replaces international law with “the law of the jungle.”

Jordan has officially condemned the moves as a “blatant violation of international law” and an assault on Palestinian statehood. The country retains a unique legal and custodial role in Jerusalem under historical agreements and its 1994 peace treaty with Israel.[]
