Indonesian Mosque Licensing in Myanmar Completed

Jakarta, 2 Sya’ban 1438/29 April 2017 (MINA) – During his visit to the Philippines, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) held a bilateral meeting with Myanmar State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi (Daw Suu) in Manila on Saturday (29/4).

The two leaders discussed a number of bilateral cooperation issues including the planned construction of a mosque by Indonesian government in the country.

At a meeting took place in the Sofitel Hotel room, Philippine Plaza, Manila, Daw Suu told Jokowi all the mosque licensing issues had been completed so construction could begin as soon as possible.

“President and Daw Suu also talked about building a mosque in Rakhine. Daw Suu said all licensing issues have been completed so the construction can begin as soon as possible, ” the ministry wrote in a statement received by Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA).

In addition, Jokowi also committed to offer cooperation assistance to his colleague. Not only immediate assistance such as the delivery of humanitarian containers recently, but also long-term cooperation between the two countries.

“The point is that this Rakhine State can develop into an advanced, inclusive, non-discriminatory region,” said Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi who accompanied the president at the meeting.

Furthermore, in the 30-minutes meeting also discussed the development of Myanmar’s resource capacity, mainly in the need for Myanmar’s police training.

“So if we view from amount, Myanmar has only half of the needs of the police. It was once mentioned that the number reached about 80 thousand polices but actually the required number is 160 thousand. Daw Suu said she wanted to work with Indonesia in the framework of this capacity building,” She added.(L/RE1/RS5)
