Jakarta, MINA – The Indonesian government has spoken out about two giant Iranian oil tankers passing through Indonesian waters. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that the activity did not violate international law.

“Indonesia has noted reports regarding the presence of foreign vessels in Indonesian waters,” said Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang in a written statement on Tuesday.

Yvonne explained that navigation rules in any waters are subject to international law, particularly UNCLOS 1982, which respects various transit regimes in each maritime zone.

“The Indonesian government is currently conducting field verification and continuing internal coordination, and considers that these vessels are exercising their right of passage in accordance with international law,” Yvonne said.
