Rome, MINA – The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) 2026 humanitarian mission fleet was officially launched on Thursday from the port of Syracuse, Italy, to begin its long journey toward the Gaza Strip.
The departure ceremony was attended by local community figures, the GSF steering committee, and representatives from Greenpeace and Open Arms, who played a vital role in preparing the logistical needs and technical support for the flotilla.
Indonesian steering committee member Maimon Herawati was present at this historic moment. She expressed deep admiration and respect for the Italian nation, which in October 2025 bravely held a national strike to voice justice for Palestine.
According to Maimon, the solidarity shown by Italian society has transcended the barriers of religion, race, ethnicity, and geographical boundaries.

“The Italian people’s solidarity transcends the boundaries of religion, race, ethnicity, and region,” said Maimon, who is also Chair of the Steering Council of the Global Peace Convoy Indonesia (GPCI).
Maimon Herawati urged the world to no longer remain silent and to immediately take concrete action for Palestine. She expressed hope that this spirit could serve as an example for Indonesia.
As the country with the world’s largest Muslim population, Maimon dreams that Indonesia will not only offer diplomatic support but can also take a greater role, even hosting a similar humanitarian mission in the future.
This mission involves a very large fleet. A total of 20 ships departing from Italy will join 39 ships that had previously departed from Barcelona. The journey will continue as ships from various other European countries meet at an assembly point in the Mediterranean Sea.

It is estimated that more than 70 ships will move together in this mission to break the illegal blockade imposed on Gaza.
The Global Sumud Flotilla voyage is not just an ordinary sea journey, but a tangible form of resistance against the genocidal policies and blockade that suffocate the lives of civilians in Gaza. With 70 ships now crossing the Mediterranean, the world is witnessing a humanitarian determination that refuses to remain silent in the face of oppression.[]
