Doha, MINA – Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on Tuesday called for accountability for those responsible for what he described as genocide in the Gaza Strip since October 2023, Anadolu Agency reports.

“What happened in the Gaza Strip is unquestionably genocide, and its perpetrators must not be allowed to escape accountability,” Tamim said in an address opening the 55th annual session of Qatar’s Shura Council in Doha.

Qatar has played a key mediating role in diplomatic efforts to end Israel’s war on Gaza and secure humanitarian assistance for Palestinians.

According to Palestinian authorities, more than 74,000 Palestinians have been killed and over 175,000 injured in Gaza since October 2023, most of them women and children. Around 90 percent of the enclave’s infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed.

The emir also reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to regional stability and security.

“We will continue working with our brothers and our international and regional partners to keep our region stable and secure,” he said.

In November 2024, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Separately, the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the United Nations’ principal judicial organ, is hearing a case brought by South Africa accusing Israel of violating the Genocide Convention in Gaza. Several other countries have joined the proceedings.

The ICJ case and the ICC warrants are separate legal processes, with different mandates and procedures.

Qatar, alongside Egypt and Türkiye, helped mediate the Gaza ceasefire agreement that took effect on October 10, 2025, under a plan proposed by US President Donald Trump.

Despite the agreement, Palestinian health authorities have continued to report casualties from Israeli attacks. Gaza’s Health Ministry says 1,493 Palestinians have been killed and 5,299 injured in reported ceasefire violations since the truce took effect.

The humanitarian situation remains severe, with restrictions on the entry of food, medicine, medical supplies, shelter materials and prefabricated homes adding to the hardships faced by Gaza’s population.

Around 2.4 million Palestinians live in the enclave, including approximately 2.15 million displaced people, according to the figures provided in the report.

Qatar has continued to use its diplomatic channels to support ceasefire efforts and humanitarian assistance. The emir’s latest remarks place accountability and justice for Palestinians at the center of his address to the Shura Council.

His call comes as international legal proceedings concerning Israel’s conduct in Gaza continue and governments face renewed pressure to support compliance with international law.

The continuing violence and humanitarian crisis have also raised concerns about the durability of the ceasefire and the prospects for a lasting political settlement.

Tamim’s remarks reaffirm Qatar’s stated position that those responsible for violations in Gaza must face accountability, while Doha continues its diplomatic efforts to promote regional stability and improve conditions for Palestinians.[]
