Ramallah, MINA – Two Palestinian women prisoners, Basmala Saad and Israa Houji, are suffering from scabies and worsening health conditions at Israel’s Damon prison amid high humidity in their cells and severe shortages of hygiene supplies, according to the Palestinian Commission of Detainees’ and Ex-Detainees’ Affairs.

The Commission reported on Wednesday that Basmala Saad, 20, has been held in solitary confinement since she was allegedly assaulted during a violent raid on her cell on October 7.

According to testimony provided to the Commission’s lawyer, Saad, who has been detained since March 13, is suffering from blisters and swelling on her legs. The medication she has received has failed to relieve her symptoms, the Commission said.

Another prisoner, Israa Houji, 31, has reportedly been experiencing severe itching in her legs that worsens at night and prevents her from sleeping. She has been detained since February 27.

Both women also reported that the use of tear gas and stun grenades during raids on prison cells, combined with poor-quality and insufficient meals, had further aggravated their health conditions.

The Commission’s report raises renewed concerns about medical care, hygiene and detention conditions faced by Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli prisons.

According to Palestinian human rights reports cited in the background information, approximately 9,350 Palestinians are currently held in Israeli prisons, including around 90 women and 350 children.

The Commission has documented cases of Palestinian prisoners suffering from chronic illnesses who allegedly have not received adequate medical treatment, resulting in deteriorating health conditions.

A recent report by the Asra Media Office documented the deaths of 92 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli custody since October 7, 2023. It also raised concerns about deteriorating detention conditions under policies associated with Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.

The report highlighted the spread of skin diseases, particularly scabies, amid poor sanitation, inadequate ventilation and shortages of clothing and personal hygiene supplies.

The Commission of Detainees’ and Ex-Detainees’ Affairs has repeatedly called on international human rights organizations and the International Committee of the Red Cross to intervene to protect Palestinian prisoners and ensure access to appropriate medical care.

Palestinian prisoner advocates have also urged international bodies to address alleged violations of international law, end medical neglect and improve detention conditions, while calling for the release of Palestinians held in administrative detention.

The reported conditions of Saad and Houji have added to concerns over the health and safety of Palestinian women prisoners, particularly those facing illness, inadequate hygiene facilities and restricted access to effective treatment.[]
