OIC TO EMPOWER MUSLIM WOMEN THROUGH ECONOMIC POTENCY

Jakarta, 18 Muharram 1434/2 December 2012 (MINA) – The Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) sets to empower Muslim women in its member countries by developing their economic potencies.

OIC will discuss matters related to efforts on empowering Muslim women economically in the 4th Ministerial Conference on the role of Women in Development, in Jakarta, on 4-6 December 2012, according to the Conference’s organizers’ website accessed by Miraj News Agency (MINA), here, on Sunday.

The Conference is convened every two year, and the previous conferences took place in Turkey, Egypt and Islamic Republic of Iran.

Delegates from 56 OIC Member States, representatives of OIC subsidiary bodies, observers and other guests will participate in this Conference. Michelle Bachelet, Under Secretary General/Executive Director of UN-Women, the highest ranking UN official in charge of women’s issue and former Chile President, has confirmed attendance to this Conference.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is scheduled to open the Conference on 4 December 2012 at the Presidential Palace, where Mrs. Linda Amalia Sari, Indonesian Minister of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection of the Republic of Indonesia, Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, Secretary General of the OIC, and Ms. Bachelet are to convey their remarks.

The theme of the fourth Conference is “Strengthening Women’s Participation and Roles in Economic Development in OIC Member States”.

On this occasion, member states will share their views on the role and participation of women in economic development and review the progress on the implementation of the OIC Plan of Action for the Advancement of Women (OPAAW) which was adopted in Cairo in 2008. Through this Conference, Indonesia encourages deeper, more specific and strategic discussion on one area of common interests in OPAAW. (T.R-10/R-12/R-03/R-006).
