Mexico City, MINA – The security situation in Mexico has intensified following the death of the most-wanted drug cartel leader, Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, during a military operation in the state of Jalisco.
The death of the key figure of the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) on Sunday sparked a wave of violence in various regions of the country, Anadolu reported.
The Mexican Ministry of Defense confirmed that El Mencho, known as one of the most influential drug kingpins in the country and an international fugitive, was killed in a clash with security forces.
The operation took place in the town of Tapalpa, Jalisco, and he died while being evacuated by helicopter to Mexico City.

Following the announcement of El Mencho’s death, reports indicated that riots broke out in several major cities. Mass actions included throwing projectiles at vehicles and property, torching buses, and blocking highways in Zapopan and Guadalajara, depicting a situation that turned into “hell” on the streets.
Chaos was not only visible on the ground. Panic spread at airports, with passengers running and several flights canceled after some facilities were targeted by groups allegedly loyal to the cartel boss.
The Mexican military also faced armed resistance from remaining CJNG members, killing several perpetrators in clashes spread across several states.
This incident adds to the long list of casualties amid the government’s strenuous efforts to eradicate drug cartels that have long dominated drug trafficking and violence in Mexico.

Security observers assess that the power vacuum within the CJNG following El Mencho’s departure could trigger territorial disputes between other criminal factions, worsening the already fragile security situation in several provinces.
The long-standing cartel conflict has been a major challenge to Mexico’s national stability and law enforcement efforts.[]
