Doha, MINA – South African jurist Navi Pillay has called for Israel to be held accountable for its actions in the occupied Palestinian territories, describing the violations as grave and saying that the situation in Gaza amounts to genocide.

In a recent interview with Al Araby TV, Pillay said the conclusion was consistent with findings attributed to the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory and Israel, which she previously chaired.

“What is taking place in the Gaza Strip constitutes genocide, according to the conclusions reached by the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory and Israel,” Pillay said.

She stressed that she had not abandoned the Palestinian cause after leaving her position and emphasized the importance of continuing to investigate and document alleged Israeli violations.

Pillay called for evidence of abuses to be reported to the international community, particularly the United Nations and other institutions capable of helping protect Palestinians, including those living in the occupied West Bank.

She also criticized what she described as the failure of the international community to prevent violations of international law or hold Israeli leaders accountable.

Pillay denounced the United States for using its veto power in the UN Security Council to block action over documented violations. She also criticized sanctions imposed by Washington on the International Criminal Court (ICC), describing them as unjust.

She called for stronger international justice mechanisms and an end to impunity, arguing that accountability is essential to upholding international law and addressing violations against Palestinians.

Pillay is a South African jurist who served as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014. She has also held senior roles in international criminal justice, including serving as a judge and president of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.

Pillay’s remarks reinforce her call for international institutions and governments to take concrete steps to prevent further violations, protect Palestinian civilians and ensure that alleged crimes under international law are investigated. She has urged states to support international justice mechanisms and use available legal avenues to pursue accountability.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains severe. The figures cited in the report describe extensive loss of life, injuries and destruction since October 2023. Pillay’s appeal places renewed emphasis on the responsibility of the international community to uphold international law and pursue accountability for violations against Palestinians.[]
