Kashmir, 27 Rajab 1436/16 May 2015 (MINA) –Students in Kashmir University (KU) joined in solidarity with Millions of others around the world to commemorate the 67th Nakba Day.

Hundreds of students participated in a Nakba Day solidarity sit-in near KU masjid. They were carrying placards and banners in support of Palestinian people including their right to return, Middle East Monitor (MEMO) quoted by Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA).

15th of May is remembered by Palestinians as the Nakba day. It is an annual day of commemoration of the displacement that preceded and followed their dispossession and exile from Palestine and the creation of the state of Israel.

750,000 Palestinians, half the Palestinian population at the time, fled their home or were expelled by Jewish paramilitary groups. Over 500 villages were destroyed in order to prevent Palestinians from returning to their homes.

They still hold the keys to their homes and hope of returning to their ancestral land one day. To mark the displacement, Palestinians annually commemorate the day as Nakba Day, or the Day of the Catastrophe.

Students who spoke on the occasion talked about the similarities between Indian and Israeli aggression tactics used to occupy the land and control the populations.

A speaker said that the recent Indian plan of separate Pandit settlements was also inspired by Israeli model of illegal settlements in Palestine.

Although that plan has been dropped for the time being, Kashmiris still remain cautious about the nefarious plans of the Indian occupation led by PDP-BJP coalition.

During the sit-in there was distribution of booklets titled ‘Kashmir: Palestine in the making’ authored by Dr Sheikh Showkat Hussain. (T/P002/NMT)
