Brussels, MINA – The European Union on Monday strongly condemned Israel’s latest attack on a UN peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon, calling for respect of the ceasefire and an immediate withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory, according to Anadolu Agency.

In an official statement, the EU said that the Israeli airstrike on Oct. 26 targeted a unit of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), describing it as “the latest in a series of similar incidents in recent weeks.”

“The safety and security of UN personnel and premises must be ensured in accordance with international law and UN Security Council Resolution 1701,” the statement read.

The EU reiterated its call for de-escalation, urging all parties to adhere to the ceasefire agreement reached on Nov. 26, 2024, and demanded that Israel “withdraw from the entire Lebanese territory.”

UNIFIL, established in 1978, was significantly expanded under UN Security Council Resolution 1701 following the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah. Despite the truce, Israel has continued airstrikes in southern Lebanon, claiming to target Hezbollah infrastructure.

According to the agreement, Israeli forces were expected to fully withdraw from southern Lebanon by January 2025. However, they have only partially pulled out, maintaining a military presence at five border outposts.[]
