Washington, MINA – US President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced the launch of phase two of the Gaza ceasefire agreement, following the successful completion of the first stage, which saw the release of 20 Israeli hostages.
“All twenty hostages are back and feeling as good as can be expected,” Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social. “A big burden has been lifted, but the job is not done. The dead have not been returned, as promised! Phase Two begins right now!!!” he added.
Under the first phase of the US- and Türkiye-brokered deal, Hamas and Israel carried out a prisoner swap that freed hundreds of Palestinian prisoners from Israel’s Ofer military prison and detention centers in the Negev Desert, while Hamas released all 20 living Israeli captives.
The announcement came a day after Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi hosted a high-level peace summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, attended by several world leaders to support the Gaza peace initiative.

According to the plan, the second phase involves forming a new governing mechanism in Gaza, establishing a multinational peacekeeping force, and overseeing the disarmament of Hamas.
Since October 2023, Israeli attacks have killed more than 67,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children leaving much of Gaza in ruins and largely uninhabitable.[]
