Cape Town, MINA – Two Jewish students in South Africa knelt when the Israeli National song was played as a form of support for the Palestinians.

As quoted from Middle East Monitor (MEMO) on Wednesday, the ninth graders of United Herzlia Middle School in Cape Town protested the persecution carried out by the Israeli army against the Palestinians and violations of international law.

The same form of protest was carried out by United States soccer star Colin Kaepernick, who knelt when the United States national anthem was played before the match in 2016.

He did too to protest the rampant police brutality against black people in the United States.

The school considers that the actions of the two students are inappropriate and contrary to the norms of the school, for which the school has given sanctions to the two students.

“The inappropriate male kneeling attitude shows a deliberate and conspicuous dislike of the school ethos,” said school education director Geoff Cohen, in a letter sent to parents.

When asked with the question of whether students are punished only because of their political opinions, Cohen claims, they are entitled to their opinions and that the school encourages discussion and always encourages children to ask questions.

Cohen concluded, the children must face the consequences of their actions. They will get sanctions that are educational and not punitive. (T/Sj/RS5)
