TGB Elected by Acclamation As Chaiman of Al-Azhar Alumni Association of Indonesian Branch

Mataram, MINA – Dr. TGB M Zainul Majdi has been elected unanimously as the Chairman of the International Organization of Al-Azha Alumni for Indonesian Branch (OIAA).

The decision to appoint the West Nusa Tenggara Governor (NTB) for two periods, better known by the acronym TGB, took place during the Multaqa (Forum) IV of Al-Azhar Egypt Alumni at the Ballroom of the NTB Islamic Center in Mataram on Wednesday night (18/10).

According to a press release received by the Bureau of Public Relations and Protocol of NTB, in this event unexpectedly the incumbent Al-Azhar Alumni Chairman Prof. Dr. Quraish Shihab appointed TGB as the chairman who will succeed him.

“If I am forced to continue to serve as chairman, then I will appoint the person who replaces me,” he said while pointing to the TGB.

Got the direct appointment, TGB looks surprised.

On this direct appointment TGB immediately appealed to Quraish Shihab for what he said to be further elaborated.

This indirect rejection received a response from Ikhwanul Kiram Mashuri, one of the participants of the forum and supported by the audience who urged TGB to accept the mandate as chairman of OIAA Indonesia.

The election of TGB as Chairman by acclamation based on many reasons, among others, for its charismatic leadership and TGB achievement in bringing change and progress of development in NTB. Even the current progress of NTB, especially in the life of religious tolerance is considered very good and the concept of syariah tourism development gained widespread appreciation from the international community.

Qurais Shihab himself in an interview on Wednesday afternoon praised the NTB Governor as a successful leader. “Many changes and successes have been achieved during his leadership,” said the professor and Al-Quran expert. He also expressed his wishes that Governor will hopefully become a more influential leader in the future.

Thanks to the insistence of many sides, finally TGB received the mandate as chairman of Al-Azhar Alumni Association of Indonesia. While Prof. Qurais Shihab was also appointed as Honorary Chairman of OIAA; Prof. Dr. Huzaemah Tahido Yanggo as vice chairman and DR. Muchlis M. Hanafi. as secretary general.

The International Conference and the National Multaqa were held for three days, from 17 to 19 October 2017, attended by around 500 delegates from all Indonesian provinces and 13 foreign countries. (R/R05/RS5)
