SYRIAN OPPOSITION AGREES TO ATTEND GENEVA 2 TALKS
Istanbul, 17 Rabi’ul Awwal 1435/19 January 2014 (MINA) – A Syrian opposition group has agreed on Saturday to attend Geneva 2 talks, which will be held in the Swiss city of Montreux on January 22.
Syrian National Coalition for Opposition and Revolutionary Forces’ (SNC) media office has announced the decision after a meeting in Istanbul.
Out of 75 members who voted, 58 backed the decision, Anadolu Agency quoted by Mi’raj Islamic News Agency (MINA) as reporting.
SNC has announced on Saturday that a 15-member committee will attend Geneva 2 talks.
The spokesperson of SNC, Luey es-Safi said that Islamic Front would like to have a member in the committee.
“We take into consideration their demand,” Safi said. “We will discuss how many members they can have in the committee,” he added.
Geneva 2 talks aim to end civil war in Syria by setting up a transitional government.
More than 130,000 people have been killed in the three-year Syrian conflict, and over two million Syrians are now registered as refugees in neighboring countries, Turkey, Lebanon and Iraq.
The United Nations’ World Food Program (WFP) delivered rations to a record 3.8 million people in Syria in December, remain out of reach, a spokeswoman said Tuesday.
The WFP expressed concern at reports of malnutrition in areas where fighting between government forces and rebel groups has entrapped civilians. (T/P09/E1).
