Jakarta, MINA – Deputy Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) and member of House of Representatives (DPR) Commission VIII, Hidayat Nur Wahid, has voiced his support for the 8th Indonesian Muslim Congress (KUII) recommendation urging the government and the DPR to establish regulations on the prevention and mitigation of LGBTQ issues.

“We certainly support what the Indonesian Muslim Congress has recommended regarding the prevention and sanctions against perpetrators and propagators of LGBTQ propaganda. This is only right, especially since MUI and all Islamic organizations have unanimously recommended this,” Hidayat said when contacted by Republika on Monday.

In the context of prevention, Hidayat stated that while the state has a role, it is also important for every individual to take responsibility. He quoted the Quranic verse from Surah At-Tahrim, verse 6: “O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire.”

Hidayat noted that Islamic organizations are well aware of this verse. Therefore, MUI and Islamic organizations can carry out preventive measures through pesantren, madrasahs, majelis taklim, and schools. “By doing this, we are making efforts to save the Muslim generation from the hellfire of this world and the hereafter,” he said.

Regarding the state’s role, Hidayat said the state is mandated by the constitution to protect all Indonesians. As a state based on law, the government and the DPR must fulfill the KUII’s recommendations constitutionally.

Hidayat said the DPR has already taken steps regarding LGBTQ issues, including agreeing to the revision of the Criminal Code (KUHP). The new provisions include punishments for sexual abuse, both same-sex and opposite-sex, which covers LGBTQ-related acts. He said this revision was supported by a Presidential Regulation that classifies LGBTQ as a non-military threat.

“I support Prof. Yusril that the state is fighting LGBTQ with the Presidential Regulation, so the recommendations from MUI and the Indonesian Muslim Congress strengthen the agreement between the DPR and the government on the KUHP,” said Hidayat.

Hidayat emphasized that Indonesia, as a Pancasila state, must be vigilant against LGBTQ. He also suggested that MUI engage non-Muslim figures and organizations to combat LGBTQ propaganda, building a shared commitment to uphold the principles of just and civilized humanity.

Hidayat also expressed support for regional governments to issue local regulations (Perda) banning LGBTQ propaganda. Furthermore, he welcomed MUI’s draft of the lgbtq/">Anti-LGBTQ Bill, saying, “We in PKS are ready to fight for it.”

Previously, the KUII VIII had urged the government and the DPR to immediately pass regulations on the prevention and mitigation of LGBTQ, as part of its recommendations presented at the closing ceremony in Jakarta.[]
