Jakarta, MINA – Mount Anak Krakatau in the waters of the Sunda Strait erupted twice on Monday evening. The activity produced volcanic ash that was observed moving northwest.

According to a BMKG report, the first eruption occurred at 20:13 WIB, followed by a second eruption at 20:28 WIB. Volcanic ash was observed at an altitude of approximately 9,000 feet or 2.7 kilometers above sea level.

BMKG Maritime Lampung forecaster Eka Suci Puspita said the volcanic ash was moving northwest at a speed of about 9 kilometers per hour. Meanwhile, a report from the Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Darwin at 20:40 WIB detected ash at the same altitude with a movement of about five knots.

The Geological Agency recorded the second eruption on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 33 millimeters and a duration of about 61 seconds. The public, tourists, and climbers are asked not to approach Mount Anak Krakatau or engage in activities within a two-kilometer radius of the active crater.

Mount Anak Krakatau is currently at Level II or Waspada (Alert). This status was set by the Geological Agency on September 21, 2026, after previously being at Level III or Siaga (Standby) due to increased volcanic activity. The government continues to remind the public to be aware of the potential for incandescent rock ejection and heavy ashfall.

BMKG reminds the public and aviation service users to follow official information developments because the direction and reach of volcanic ash distribution can change according to atmospheric wind conditions. Monitoring continues to be carried out to anticipate the impact of the eruption on public safety and aviation around the Sunda Strait.[]
