Jakarta, MINA — The Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) has appointed John Herdman as head coach of the Indonesian national team, the federation announced Saturday.
Herdman, 50, signed a long-term 2+2-year contract and will immediately begin preparations for upcoming FIFA Series matches, the 2026 AFF Championship, and the 2026 Asian Games.
The Canadian coach previously made history by leading both Canada’s men’s and women’s national teams to FIFA World Cup qualification, a feat unmatched by any other coach.
Herdman guided Canada’s men’s team to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, lifting the side from 77th to 33rd in the FIFA rankings. He also led Canada’s women’s team to the 2007 and 2011 World Cups and Olympic bronze medals in 2012 and 2016.

PSSI appointed Herdman to replace Patrick Kluivert, whose tenure ended on Oct. 16, 2025, following Indonesia’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
“We hope this new era will raise the standard and achievements of Indonesian football,” the PSSI chairman said in a statement.
Herdman’s initial agenda includes leading Indonesia in the FIFA Series scheduled to take place at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta from March 23–31, 2026. The national team will also compete in FIFA international windows in June, September, October and November 2026.
Indonesia’s regional campaign in the 2026 AFF Championship is set to begin on July 25, while Herdman will also oversee preparations for the under-23 squad ahead of the 2026 Asian Games.
