Jakarta Police Publicizes Notice about December 2 Rally

Jakarta, 24 Safar 1438/24 November 2016 (MINA) – The Jakarta citys police chief, Inspector General M Iriawan, has issued a notice cum appeal for peace in view of some protestors plans to hold rallies on Friday, December 2.

“This was done to inform the people of the notice issued by the Jakarta police chief,” said the head of Jakarta polices Public Relations Senior Commissioner, Awi Setiyono, in Jakarta on Wednesday.

He noted that his office yesterday dropped 50,000 copies of the notice using a chopper.

General Iriawan has also directed aerial police heads as well as the Public Order and Safety Patrons to disseminate information about the notice, he added.

Both capital and regional Public Order and Safety Patrons (Bhabinkamtibmas and Babinsa) distributed copies of the notice using the door-to-door method.

They have also put up banners and billboards displaying the same information.

Commissioner Setiyono disclosed that the notice also advises the public not to hold any rally along protocol roads (General Sudirman – MH Thamrin strip) as it can potentially cause public disturbance that day.

The Jakarta Police Chief has also urged the demonstrators to refrain from indulging in any act of anarchy or committing treason against the government.

He had previously released a notice, vide letter number Mak/04/XI/2016, regarding expression of an opinion in public.

It was reported that the National Guard Movement of Indonesian Ulema Council Fatwa (GNPF-MUI) will organize a mass peace rally on December 2, following a similar rally on November 4.

The protesters are demanding that the police must detain incumbent Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, now rendered non-active, after he has been been named a suspect in a blasphemy case. . (T/R07/R01)
