Al-Quds, MINA – Israeli occupation police barred Sheikh Ekrima Sabri, head of the Higher Islamic Council in Jerusalem, from entering the Old City for several days after interrogating him at the Moskobiya detention center over his stance against the closure of the Aqsa Mosque, his lawyers confirmed on Saturday, PIC reports.

Following an interrogation that lasted approximately two hours, Israeli police released Sheikh Sabri under restrictive conditions, including a 15-day ban on entering the Old City of Jerusalem. He was also forced to sign a personal guarantee and pledge to appear for questioning if summoned again.

The interrogation session focused on Sheikh Sabri’s recent remarks, in which he expressed the Islamic legal opinion regarding the Israeli closure of the Aqsa Mosque to Muslim worshipers.

After his release, Sheikh Sabri affirmed that he was prohibited from entering the Mosque because he clearly stated that it is religiously impermissible to suspend Friday prayers or close the Islamic holy site. He warned of an Israeli plot targeting the Aqsa Mosque, stressing the urgent need to protect its Islamic sanctity and ensure Muslims’ right to perform prayers inside it.

According to his legal representatives, Sheikh Sabri has been facing restrictions on his movement for more than a year, including an ongoing ban on his entry to the Aqsa Mosque.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions in Occupied Jerusalem, where Israeli authorities have maintained the closure of the Aqsa Mosque compound for seven consecutive days, preventing thousands of Palestinian worshipers from accessing the site during the holy month of Ramadan.[]
