ISRAELI CHECKPOINT STOPS PRIME MINISTER’S CONVOY

Ramallah, 13 Rabi’ul Awwal 1435/15 January 2014 (MINA) – An Israeli checkpoint Tuesday stopped the convoy of Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah on a road outside Ramallah, said Ehab Bseiso, the government spokesman, at a press conference.

He said the soldiers asked for the identification papers of the prime minister and his staff, but he refused to cooperate with them.

He said the atmosphere was tense as Israeli settlers and people from nearby villages came to the location. However, confrontation was averted when the convoy was allowed to continue one hour later.

Bseiso denounced the army act, which he described as an Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people, Wafa quoted by Mi’raj islamic News Agency (MINA) as reporting.

He said it represents an insult against the Palestinian people and a reflection of Israeli policy towards the peace process.

Bseiso stressed that the incident was premeditated since normally there is no checkpoint in that location.

He said Israeli security reinforcements arrived at the scene and that it took a long time before the convoy was allowed to continue on the road to Ramallah, which indicates that the incident was not motivated merely by ordinary security check.

Bseiso stressed that the Palestinian people’s sense of security and safety will continue to be at stake as long as they are subject to the Israeli occupation and as long as Israeli attacks and settlement construction continue.

“It is only the establishment of a fully sovereign and independent Palestinian state that will ensure the full safety and security for the Palestinian people,” he said.(T/P02/P04/mirajnews.com)
