INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ISLAM, CIVILIZATION AND PEACE ISSUES JAKARTA RECOMMENDATION

      Jakarta, 16 Jumadil Akhir 1434/ 25 April 2013 (MINA) – The International Conference on Islam, Civilization and Peace Thursday evening concluded a two-day meeting (23-24 April 2013/11-12 Jumadil Akhir1434H) by issuing “The Jakarta Recommendation on Islam in Global Civilization and Peace.”

      The Conference was organized by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia in cooperation with a steering committee from Jordan consists of the Ministry of Awqaf, Islamic Affairs, and Holy Places and five public universities in cooperation with Jordan Islamic banks and the Indonesian Ambassador in Jordan.

      It was aimed to illuminate and emphasize the noble Islamic values as stated in Amman Message that would lay the basis for mutual understanding amongst Islamic world to contribute more for better civilization and world peace that clearly stated in that Message.

     The conference which was attended by approximately 500 participants from Indonesia, Jordan, Japan, Taiwan, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Singapore, Egypt, oman, Saudi Arabia, and East Timor,  was motivated by a shared intention to promote the holy message of Islam: brotherhood, tolerance, civilization, and peace.

In the Name of Allah,Most Gracious, Most Merciful

       By the Grace and Blessing of Almighty Allah, the International Conference on Islam, Civilization, and Peace concluded in Jakarta, 23-24 April 2013 (11-12/6/1434H).

      The Conference was organized by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia in cooperation with a steering committee from Jordan consists of the Ministry of Awqaf, Islamic Affairs, and Holy Places and five public universities in cooperation with Jordan Islamic banks and the Indonesian Ambassador in Jordan, to illuminate and emphasize the noble Islamic values as stated in Amman Message that would lay the basis for mutual understanding amongst Islamic world to contribute more for better civilization and world peace that clearly stated in that Message.

      The conference was attended by approximately 500 participants from Indonesia, Jordan, Japan, Taiwan, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Singapore, Egypt, oman, Saudi Arabia, and East Timor. It was motivated by a shared intention to promote the holy message of Islam: brotherhood, tolerance, civilization, and peace.

      It was also aimed to respond to the negative impetuousness of Islam in the world. Islam has been seen as a religion related to violence, intolerance, anarchism, and terrorism.

 

     At the sessions of the conference, the speakers and participants emphasized thefollowings:

1. The differences amongst schools of thought (madzhab), religions, and beliefs shall not become obstacles for promoting world peace. Islam encourages moderation, objectivity, peace built on justice, impartiality and devoid itself from the trap of emotions and sensationalism. It is consistent with the mission of the moderate nation, as Allah says: “Thus have we made of you anUmmah justly balanced that ye might be witnesses over the people and the Messenger ov er yourselves … (Qur’an 2: 143).

The tenet principles of Islam has made clear that the goal of its message is realizing mercy and good for all people. “We did not send you [Muhammad] butout of mercyfor all creatures.” (Qur’an 21:07).

2.  To develop civilized and peaceful world requires quality human resources that should be the concern of all aspects of community including: religious communities, governments, private sectors, non-profit organizations, education institutions, mass media, and international or ganizations. Islam emphasizes the importance of creating great nations (ummah) with dignity, as Allah says: “You are the best of the nations raised upfor (the benefit of)men;you enjoin what is right and forbid the wrong and believe in Allah….” (Qur’an3:110).

The teaching of Islam forbids Muslims to neglect the quality of its young generations, as Allah says: and let those fear who, should they leave behind them weakly offspring, would fear on their account, so let them be careful of(their dutyto) Allah, and let them speak right words” (Qur’an 4:9)

3. Enhancing equitable economy and prosperous Ummah should be set as main concern to achieve harmonious and peaceful world through utilizing Islamic economic instruments such as awqaf, zakat, and sodaqoh. Islam emphasizes the importance of building prosperous, just, and greal nations (ummah), as Allah says: …so that it may not be a thing taken by turns amongst the rich of you….. “ (Qur’an 59:07).

 

The Conference recommended the following:

1.To invite the Muslim world to continuously enhance the understanding of Islam as rahmatan lil alamin through education, preaching (da’wah), training, books, publication, and media.

2. To invite the Muslim world to persistently develop dialogue amongst different Islamic school of thoughts (madzhab), religions, cultures, and civilizations inline with the methodology of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as commanded by Almighty Allah: “Say: O People of the Book! Come to commonterms between us andyou … “ (Qur’an 3:64)

3.To encourage all Muslim organizations to utilize their resources and influence to disseminate peace built on justice, understanding, and harmony and to support peaceful resolution.

4.To appeal to all nations to respect religions and beliefs, especially Divine messages and Messengers (blessing and peace be upon them), and guarantee responsible freedom on matters that could have negative and undesirable impact on people.

5.To call upon Muslim world to utilize the benefit of modern media and technological communications that would be more appealing to highlight the teaching of Islam and disseminate its message of justice, peace, love, and harmony.

6. To appeal all nations to utilize and share available resources and all possible means to strengthen the role of education in empowering society and the quality of young generations.

7. To encourage the Muslim world to strengthen cooperation amongst governments, institutions, community, and people by maximizing Islamic economic infrastructures such as awqaf, zakat, shodaqah, as well as Islamic banking and business in order to increase welfare of the Ummah.

8. To encourage the Ummah to establish global institute for Zakat and Takaful that would be used for sustainable development across Muslim world.

9. To invite and encourage the adoption of the conference recommendations and explore the means that ensure the realization of its findings.

      All participants further recommended this conference will be held once in two years either in Jordan or Indonesia, in cooperation with the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia and the Ministry of Awqaf, Islamic Affairs, and Holy Places of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

       At the end of the conference, participants expressed gratitude and appreciations to the Government of Indonesia for hosting the conference, and to His Excellency President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono for supporting it. They also expressed similar gratitude to King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein and the Jordanian steering committee.
