Jakarta, MINA – Indonesian Muslim scholar Prof. Sudarnoto Abdul Hakim has called on parties involved in the Saudi-Houthi conflict to halt attacks on civilian facilities and pursue peaceful negotiations, warning that continued hostilities could endanger innocent lives and disrupt Muslim pilgrims performing Umrah.

Sudarnoto, who heads the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) division for foreign relations and international cooperation, expressed his concern on October 15 over attacks attributed to the Houthi movement that reportedly targeted civilian infrastructure.

He said such attacks pose serious risks to public safety, particularly for people who have no involvement in the conflict. The violence also threatens to disrupt the religious activities of Muslims traveling to Saudi Arabia for Umrah.

“I am deeply concerned about Houthi attacks targeting civilian facilities,” Sudarnoto said, stressing that public infrastructure and people outside the conflict must not become targets of violence.

As president of the Asia Pacific Coalition for al-Quds and Palestine, he emphasized that civilian rights and safety must be respected under all circumstances. He also called for greater attention to the security of pilgrims who are currently performing Umrah or planning to undertake the journey.

Sudarnoto argued that attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure run counter to the principles of international law. He urged all parties involved to stop actions that place non-combatants at risk.

Beyond an immediate halt to the attacks, he called on both sides to end the fighting and avoid measures that could trigger further hostility.

He stressed that peace talks and diplomatic engagement are essential to prevent the conflict from spreading and creating a wider humanitarian crisis.

Sudarnoto also urged the United States and other international actors to avoid steps that could heighten tensions or make a peaceful settlement more difficult.

“Countries such as the United States should not contribute to inflaming the situation and making matters more complicated,” he said, warning against further deterioration of the global situation.

He further called on the Indonesian government to use its diplomatic standing to help encourage dialogue and identify a peaceful solution acceptable to the parties involved.

According to Sudarnoto, Indonesia has an opportunity to contribute through diplomacy, constructive engagement and efforts to prevent further escalation.

He maintained that protecting civilians, ending hostilities and advancing negotiations must remain central priorities to limit the conflict’s humanitarian consequences and prevent further instability.

The appeal comes amid heightened regional tensions following attacks attributed to the Houthi movement, including an incident at Riyadh airport that reportedly injured two Indonesian citizens. Indonesia’s diplomatic engagement could help support broader efforts to reduce tensions and protect civilians.[]
