Indonesian Athlete Surahmat Wijoyo Wins Gold Medal in ISG

Jakarta, 18 Sha’ban 1438/15 May 2017 (MINA) – Indonesian weightlifter Surahmat Wijoyo won the first gold medal in the Islamic Solidarity Games (ISG) 2017, the biggest sporting event among Muslim countries, in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Wijoyo won the gold medal in the men’s 56-kilogram (kg) category, Antara News reported, citing a press statement received here on Monday.

He managed the best clean and jerk lift of 145 kg to win with an overall weight of 261 kg.

Meanwhile, his teammate Muhamad Furkon took the second place in the mens 56-kg category.

Silver medalist Muhamad Furkon of Indonesia succeeded in lifting a 256-kilogram bar.

With the success of the two weightlifters, Indonesia took the lead in the medals tally.

Meanwhile, Iran and Turkey had won one gold and one silver medal respectively.

At the previous ISG, Indonesia emerged as the overall champion, bagging 36 gold medals, 35 silver medals, and 34 bronze medals.

Iran came in second in the medal standings at the third ISG, with 30 gold medals, 17 silver medals, and 12 bronze medals.

The ISG was held in the South Sumatra provincial capital of Palembang, Indonesia, from September 22 to October 1, 2013.

Egypt finished in third place, with 26 gold medals, 28 silver medals, and 31 bronze medals and Malaysia came fourth, with 26 gold medals, 19 silver medals, and 29 bronze medals.

Meanwhile, Turkey won 23 gold medals, 31 silver medals, and 49 bronze medals to secure the fifth place.(T/RS5/RS1)
