Washington, MINA – John Mitnick, the former General Counsel for the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) during the first Trump administration, has called on Congress to impeach President Donald Trump following the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti.
“I am enraged and embarrassed by DHS’s lawlessness, fascism, and cruelty,” Mitnick stated in a post on X. “Impeach and remove Trump, now.” The development was reported by Newsweek on Sunday.
Newsweek has reached out to the White House via email outside of normal business hours for a response, as well as Draganfly Inc., where Mitnick serves as chairman, for further comment on his behalf.
This public call for impeachment by a former senior DHS lawyer who served under Trump underscores the intensifying criticism from various quarters regarding the administration’s immigration operations in Minnesota. The incident has ignited widespread protests and sparked clashes over the scope of federal investigative authority.

The situation has also intersected with high-stakes negotiations in Washington, where Democrats are threatening to block funding for DHS, heightening the political fallout from the Minneapolis shooting.
In his post, Mitnick elaborated on his background, “I helped stand up DHS in 2002 and 2003 and subsequently had the homeland security portfolio as White House Associate Counsel and served as the Department’s General Counsel. I am enraged and embarrassed by DHS’s lawlessness, fascism, and cruelty.”
Mitnick served as DHS General Counsel from February 2018 to September 2019 under President Trump and previously worked in homeland security law during the George W. Bush administration. He endorsed Joe Biden in 2020 alongside other former Republican officials.
His remarks were made in response to a lengthy post by attorney George Conway, a frequent Trump critic, who described Pretti’s death as “a straight-up execution of a protester by Trump’s federal brownshirts.”

“Trump’s militarization of Minneapolis and other parts of our country isn’t about illegal immigration,” Conway said. “It’s not about enhancing public safety. It’s about destroying that sense of safety to intimidate political opponents, and to punish dissent.”[]
