Bandung, MINA – The match between Vietnam and the Philippines took place at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium, Bandung, as part of the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 Division 1 tournament on Saturday night.

Competing in Group B, Vietnam held a 1-0 lead. A goal by the Philippines’ Kenji Nishioka (22) in the 82nd minute was not enough to save “The Azkals” (The Wild Dogs) from defeat.

In the 21st minute, Randy Schneider (11) unleashed a powerful shot from outside the penalty area, but the crossbar saved Vietnam from conceding.

Conversely, a few minutes later, a through-ball sent William Minh Hoang (11) sprinting behind the Philippine defense. Pressure from two Philippine defenders caused William’s shot to deflect off an opponent.

The rebound fell to the unmarked Dinh Bac Nguyen (9), who easily fired the ball into the net.

GOAL! The score shifted to 1-0 in favor of The Golden Star.

In the second half, Dinh Bac Nguyen had a chance to score a second goal in a one-on-one situation against Philippine goalkeeper Michael Falkesgaard (15). However, Falkesgaard successfully blocked the Vietnamese forward’s shot.

After repeated attacks, the Philippines finally scored in the 82nd minute through Kenji Nishioka (22).

It began with a scramble inside the penalty area, from which the Philippines managed to gain possession. The ball was played wide to Sandro Reyes (6). Reyes delivered a visionary pass toward the goalmouth, which Kenji met while sandwiched between two Vietnamese defenders. GOAL!

However, a VAR review ruled that Kenji was in an offside position.

The score remained 1-0 in Vietnam’s favor.

Ultimately, referee Thoriq brought the match to a close with the scoreline unchanged. Vietnam secured 3 points and sits in second place in the Group B standings, behind Thailand. []
