Jakarta, MINA – A goal from a substitute secured the bronze medal for Malaysia in the match against Vietnam for third place in the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup Division 1 on Monday.
During the match at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK) in Jakarta, the Malayan Tigers and The Golden Star played out a goalless first half.
In the 62nd minute, the Malayan Tigers broke the deadlock through a player who had come on just two minutes earlier. A shot by Fergus Tierney (13) from outside the penalty area left goalkeeper Giang Patrik Le (1) rooted to the spot as the ball sailed beyond his reach and into the net.

The score became 1–0.
In the 72nd minute, the referee awarded a penalty to Vietnam, ruling that Harith Haikal (14) had fouled Van Do Le (4) inside the box.
However, following a VAR review, the referee determined that Harith’s tackle was clean. The penalty decision was overturned.
In the final ten minutes, Vietnam launched more intense attacks. Yet, Malaysia’s tight defense thwarted every pass and shot from the Vietnamese players, including a shot in the 90th minute that was safely gathered by goalkeeper Syihan Hazmi (16).
