DEFENSE TEAM TO VISIT MORSI THURSDAY

     Cairo, 1 Safar 1435/5 December 2013 (MINA) – Defense lawyers will visit ousted president Mohamed Morsi in Alexandria’s Borg al-Arab prison on Thursday.

     “The defense team has got a permission to meet my father,” Morsi’s son Osama told Anadolu Agency quoted by Mi’raj News Agency (MINA) as reporting.

    The visit will be the second by the defense team since the deposed leader was moved to the Borg al-Arab prison on November 4.

    Morsi’s trial on charges of inciting the murder of demonstrators outside the Ittihadiya presidential palace late last year will resume on January 8.

     During the first session on November 4, the ousted leader refused to recognize the trial’s legitimacy or accept legal representation.

    In mid-November, the Egyptian authorities have transferred ousted President Mohammed Morsi from a hospital room to solitary confinement in the Borg Al-Arab Prison.

    According to Assistant Interior Minister Ahmed Helmi, Morsi has completed the 10-day quarantine period and will now be transferred from the hospital in accordance with prison regulations.

      Helmi on November 14 saying that there is no discrimination in the treatment of the president; his health is good and the transfer is routine. It was carried out on the instructions of Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim.

     “All prisoners are treated in the same way,” Helmi insisted.

     The democratically elected leader was removed from power by Egypt’s military establishment on July 3 following mass protests against his presidency.

     Along with “inciting violence,” Morsi also stands accused of “conspiring” with Palestinian resistance faction Hamas, escaping from prison during Egypt’s 2011 uprising and insulting the judiciary.

     Morsi’s supporters, for their part, insist all the charges against him are politically motivated. (T/P09/P04).
