ARAB LEAGUE CHIEF VISITS WEST BANK

Ramallah, 17 Shafar 1434/30 December 2012 (Ma’an/MINA) – The Secretary General of the Arab League and the Egyptian foreign minister arrived in the West Bank on Saturday to discuss pledged financial aid to the Palestinian Authority.

The Arab League’s Nabil Al-Arabi and Egypt’s Mohammad Kamel Amr are expected to meet with President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah later in the day.

Earlier Saturday, Palestine’s envoy to the Arab League Muhammad Sbeih told government press agency Wafa the visit would demonstrate Arab solidarity with Palestine after the UN vote to upgrade its status.

The delegation confirms the position of the Arab League is fully behind the nascent Palestinian state in the face of all its threats, Sbeih said.

He was meant to visit with a delegation of Arab foreign ministers, but the broader delegation was postponed to a later date, PA foreign minister Riyad al-Malki said Thursday.

On the agenda for Al-Arabi’s meetings is an update on the so-called Arab safety net, a monthly payment pledged by the League to support the struggling Palestinian finances, which has yet to arrive.

The leaders will also talk about potential routes to reviving peace talks with Israel. (T/R-018/R-006)
