Cairo, MINA – Egypt’s leading Sunni Islamic institution, Al-Azhar, has strongly condemned Israel’s move to approve a law allowing the execution of Palestinian prisoners, calling for urgent international action to halt the measure.

In a statement issued Tuesday, Al-Azhar expressed deep concern over what it described as the failure of the international legal system to confront the legislation passed by the Israeli parliament. The law was approved by the Knesset with a majority vote, drawing criticism from various international and regional actors.

Al-Azhar said the decision reflects a dangerous attempt to legitimize the killing of Palestinians under legal cover, describing it as a violation of fundamental human values and international law. The institution rejected all measures aimed at institutionalizing violence against detainees.

The statement also warned that such policies expose what it described as the “brutality” of the occupation and risk further escalating tensions in the region. It emphasized that legalizing executions does not change the reality of the act, but rather deepens concerns about human rights violations.

Al-Azhar urged the international community to take swift and concrete steps to prevent the implementation of the law and to uphold the protection of Palestinian prisoners in accordance with international humanitarian standards.[]
