“WE STAND FOR THE DEMOCRACY IN EGYPT”: EU AMBASSADOR TO ASEAN

        Jakarta, 26 Dul Hijja 1434/31 October 2013 (MINA) – The European Union (EU) Ambassador to Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam and ASEAN, Olof Skoog stated his institution always stand for the democratic rule and do not takes any sides in Egyptian crisis.

        “We all khow that Egypt is a democratic country. We do not take any sides, but we stand for the democracy in Egypt crisis. EU is trying to help Egypt come back to the democratic country,” said Skoog in Jakarta, Thursday.

         EU also commited to boost economic support for Egypt which decrease during ‘the government transition’. In the meeting of the Minister of Industry and Foreign Trade of Egypt, Mounir Fakhry Abdel-Nour and  the European Union Ambassador James Moran,  They discussed economic ties and  trade exchange as well as joint investments between Egypt and the EU countries during the next stage.

       Minister Abdel-Nour said that the EU is one of the most important and strategic partners of Egypt on the political and economic levels. He stressed the importance of maximizing joint cooperation between Egypt and the EU countries in order to serve interests on both parties.

       The Minister referred to the possibility of achieving more cooperation between Egypt and EU, especially in the  field of education, health and vocational training. He urged Moran to show to the European public opinion the real situation on the ground in Egypt.

        For his part, Moran said that the Egyptian embassies in the EU countries should show the real and true information about the situation in Egypt.

        Moran stressed the European Union’s commitment to continue support to the Egyptian economy  aimed at creating a suitable economic climate that restores confidence in investment and supports the economic stability. He stressed the importance of removing obstacles and challenges in face of the improvement of economic ties between Egypt and the European Union.

        EU is an economic and political union of 28 member states that are located primarily in Europe. The EU operates through a system of supranational independent institutions and intergovernmental negotiated decisions by the member states. Institutions of the EU include the European Commission, the Council of the European Union, the European Council, the Court of Justice of the European Union, the European Central Bank, the Court of Auditors, and the European Parliament. The European Parliament is elected every five years by EU citizens. The EU’s de facto capital is Brussels.

        The EU traces its origins from the European Coal and Steel Community(ECSC) and the European Economic Community (EEC), formed by the Inner Six countries in 1951 and 1958, respectively. In the intervening years the community and its successors have grown in size by the accession of new member states and in power by the addition of policy areas to its remit.
