US Designates Palestine Action as ‘Global Terrorist Organization

Washington, MINA – The United States on Wednesday (August 26) designated Palestine Action as a “global terrorist organization,” following the UK government’s move last year to ban the group.

In a notice on its website, the US Treasury Department stated it had placed the group on its sanctions blacklist, accusing it of “supporting various acts of terrorism” since July 2020, according to The New Arab.

The group is among several parties the Treasury Department described as an “extremist left-wing terrorist network using violence” that were sanctioned on Wednesday.

Palestine Action became the first protest group to be banned under UK counter-terrorism legislation in July last year, placing it alongside groups such as Islamic State and Al-Qaeda. The ban was condemned by human rights monitors and led to the arrest of thousands of peaceful protesters under the Terrorism Act.

The group is currently challenging the ban and will bring its case to the Supreme Court in November.

“Palestine Action’s activities in the US and elsewhere have always been aimed at saving lives by disrupting Israel’s war machine, which is committing genocide in Gaza with the support of the US government. Trump is at the center of the mass killing of Palestinians, and continuously facilitates the Zionist regime,” said Palestine Action co-founder Huda Ammori.

“By banning Palestine Action using terrorism legislation for the first time in British history, the Keir Starmer government has created a blueprint for authoritarian governments worldwide to silence political dissent and criminalize British citizens traveling or residing abroad,” she continued.

“Trump’s decision to adopt Keir Starmer’s designation of Palestine Action as a ‘terrorist’ group should be the final blow to end this dangerous, cruel, and disproportionate ban,” she added.

The US Treasury Department’s action will freeze the group’s assets in the US and prohibit American organizations and individuals from transacting or engaging with them.

Founded six years ago, the group describes itself as a “direct action movement committed to ending global involvement in Israel’s apartheid and genocide regime.”

Palestine Action intensified its activities after Israel launched its genocidal assault on Gaza in October 2023. They have targeted operations of Israeli arms company Elbit in the UK, as well as military sites involved in British arms sales to Israel.[]
